Navajo Tree of Life Rug

This huge rug was hanging on the wall in a cabin we rented in Inverness. The first thing that caught my eye, of course, were the swastikas. Since I know that the owners are not Nazis, and I also know that the swastika is an ancient symbol, I thought I’d try to find out more about the rug. It appears to be of Navajo origin, depicting the Tree of Life. The swastikas are “Whirling Logs, an ancient symbol from many cultures, the North American symbol depicted the cyclic motion of life, seasons and the four winds. Taken from the image of a tree in a whirlwind, this image is found in Navajo sand paintings frequently. It is considered a powerful medicine.” [source]
