iPhone Wallpaper
13Jan10A few months ago my sis gave us her old iPhone, which we basically use as an iPod Touch. There’s no way I’d pay over $100 a month when I rarely use a cell phone. I finally got it connected to the Internet and thought I’d change the wallpaper. UndergroundBastard to the rescue! Check out his beautiful, intricate, psychedelic, and truly unique iPhone Wallpapers.
Roasted Vegetables
08Jan10Roasted veggies are so easy to make, and so tasty. Even people who think they absolutely hate Brussels sprouts (almost) always like them roasted like this. I used Brussels sprouts, broccoli, potatoes (new, purple, and mini Yukon Gold), sweet potatoes, eyeball (pearl) onions, beets, carrots, and garlic. I drizzled liberally with olive oil and seasoned the vegetables with salt, pepper, and thyme. I also added a little water to the dish and stirred throughout roasting so they wouldn’t dry out. These took about 2 hours at 375°, but roasting times vary according to size, amount, etc.
Miniature Fruit Tarts
08Jan10These are so easy to make. I baked some frozen puff pastry cups which taste good, but I’d use miniature tart shells if I wanted them to look better. And if I could find them around here! I was in a hurry, so I used instant vanilla pudding instead of home made custard. I topped them with strawberries, kiwi fruit, canned peaches, and blackberries and finished with a bit of apricot preserves. Simple and delicious!
What to do with the leftover fruit? Make fruit salad!
PW’s Fancy Macaroni
06Jan10Pioneer Woman‘s Fancy Macaroni is so incredibly good. I used grated Gruyere, Swiss, and Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese. I also threw in some shredded Cheddar/Jack because I ran out of Chevre, which I used last time. PW says to serve it as a side dish, but it’s so rich and filling that a small bowl of it is enough of a meal for me!
Navajo Tree of Life Rug
03Jan10This huge rug was hanging on the wall in a cabin we rented in Inverness. The first thing that caught my eye, of course, were the swastikas. Since I know that the owners are not Nazis, and I also know that the swastika is an ancient symbol, I thought I’d try to find out more about the rug. It appears to be of Navajo origin, depicting the Tree of Life. The swastikas are “Whirling Logs, an ancient symbol from many cultures, the North American symbol depicted the cyclic motion of life, seasons and the four winds. Taken from the image of a tree in a whirlwind, this image is found in Navajo sand paintings frequently. It is considered a powerful medicine.” [source]
